In the Spring of 2007, FMN student Becky Rose put together a presentation on how to build a rain barrel as her final project for her Freshwater Wetlands Module. Becky’s presentation peaked the interest of myself as a fellow FMN student. I had just finished landscaping and building a garden of my own and was eager to water these new features with a rain barrel. However, after finding it difficult to find a barrel and learning how expensive they can be, I started looking around for plastic drums in order to make my own. I eventually found a great source for cheap barrels and at that moment, RainLife Rain Barrels was born. My husband and I worked to modify Becky’s original design to fit our needs and later began giving workshops and supplying barrels in bulk to a variety of local organizations, garden clubs, city municipalities, and schools. This small business has shown great potential, and has even been featured on WPTV News Channel 5 in West Palm Beach as part of a segment on rain barrels and water conservation.
